Origins

Joe Cerisano fled his West Virginia coal-mining hometown at 17 to pursue rock stardom. A botched record deal left him hundreds of thousands in debt to Columbia Records, but an unexpected call to sing for a Miller Beer ad changed everything.

The Jingle Years

Joe was let into the world of jingle advertising — an industry where the most talented musicians of 1980s New York were making incredible money. Joe became one of the most heard voices in America while enjoying complete anonymity.

Back Home

In 1988, Joe sang the song "Back Home" for a Brooklyn Gum commercial. Unbeknownst to him, the single became a hit in Italy under the name Joe Trio. When a fan makes the connection that Joe Trio is American singer Joe Cerisano, Joe learns of his international popularity and is invited to perform live in Tuscany.

Now, 20 years since the fall of the jingle industry and since personal tragedy drove him to retirement, Joe returns to the stage.

Director's Note

Our father never told us he was famous. Growing up, we knew he could sing — but we had no idea that his voice was behind some of the most iconic commercials of the 1980s. When we discovered that he was secretly beloved in Italy, we knew this was a story that had to be told. This film is our attempt to understand the man behind the voice, and the strange, vanished world he came from.
